Object. To estimate mortality and potential years of life lost (AVPP) according to sex, age group and type of user involved in traffic accidents (TA) in Ecuador. Materials and methods. Thru the application of the AVPP indicator, we analyzed the mortality produced by TAs during the june 2016 - march 2017 period. The information regarding fatalities resulting from TA was provided by the Transit National Agency (ANT). By estimating AVPPs, we calculated the index of the years of life potentially lost. Results. TA caused the death of 1.671 people (25.648AVPP), mostly male drivers between the ages of 20 and 34. The death of pedestrians of young ages was highlighted. Conclusion. This is the first study that evidences the need to establish actions to improve safety road in the country.
