Abstract
INTRODUCTION. Several studies have found human-animals relationships to play an important role in the socioemotional development of children. OBJECTIVE. The current study aims to identify the relationship between the dependent variable, empathy, and independent variables, attitude toward pets, treatment of pets and the the possesion or not of a pet, in preadolescent participants. METHOD. In this paper we present a study of the kind ex-post-facto. Three questionnaires were applied: The Interpersonal Reactivity Index in its Spanish version, Pet Attitude Scale - Modified and The Children's Treatment of Animals Questionnaire. RESULTS. We have seen that there are relationships of covariance between some of the variables studied, which allowed us to propose a sequence of four causal models and use the structural equation models to decide which one obtains the best indicators of adjustment. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS. Companion animals have influence empathy development in children.
